Mousikos Restaurant is one of the most loved traditional restaurants in the Famagusta district, located in the village of Sotira, just a short drive from Ayia Napa and Protaras. Set inside a beautifully restored stone built house from the 1930s, it offers a proper Cypriot dining experience with a large courtyard, traditional arches, warm hospitality, and meze dishes cooked with real care.

What makes it special

Enjoy generous traditional Cypriot dishes made with care.

Experience authentic Cypriot hospitality in a restored stone setting.

Homemade halloumi and meze are standout menu options.

This is the kind of restaurant people talk about for a reason. The food is generous, the setting is full of character, and the experience feels deeply connected to local Cypriot tradition. If you are looking for high quality meze in a beautiful village setting, Mousikos is one of the strongest choices in the area.

A Traditional Stone Restaurant in Sotira

Mousikos Restaurant is housed in an old building dating back to 1934, originally a home before it was renovated by the Mousikos family in 2008 and transformed into a restaurant. Today, the space still keeps its village charm, with Cypriot stone, traditional arches, a spacious courtyard, and a welcoming terrace.

The outdoor courtyard is one of the highlights, especially during warm evenings. Tables are arranged in a setting that feels both rustic and carefully maintained, with the wood fired ovens adding to the atmosphere. It is easy to understand why the restaurant is so popular with locals as well as visitors.

You will usually know you have arrived when you spot the windmill nearby, a small landmark that gives the place even more village character.

The Food at Mousikos Restaurant

The menu at Mousikos is built around traditional Cypriot cooking, with meze as the star of the experience. Expect dishes that feel homemade, seasonal, and rooted in village flavours, from warm bread and dips to grilled meats, halloumi, kleftiko, souvla, sheftalia, vegetables, and local specialities.

The ingredients are treated simply but with great respect. Many dishes have that unmistakable homemade quality, where freshness and technique matter more than presentation tricks. It is traditional food done properly, and that is exactly the point.

The restaurant is especially known for its homemade halloumi and traditional bread. The halloumi, often served warm with coarse salt and fresh mint, is one of the dishes people remember most. The bread arrives hot, fresh, and almost impossible not to tear into immediately.

The Meze Experience

The meze at Mousikos is a full journey through Cypriot cuisine. It is generous, varied, and best enjoyed slowly, with good company and enough time to properly appreciate each round of dishes.

The meal often begins with fresh salad, warm homemade bread, olives, tahini, dips, and small seasonal plates. From there, the dishes may continue with grilled mushrooms, homemade halloumi, eggs with asparagus or courgettes, hand cut chips with oregano, keftedes, sheftalia, village sausage, souvla, and slow cooked kleftiko.

The kleftiko is one of the standout dishes, traditionally cooked in a clay oven until the meat becomes beautifully tender. Served with potatoes, it captures everything people love about old Cypriot cooking: patience, simplicity, and deep flavour.

Homemade Halloumi, Bread, and Local Specialities

Mousikos has become especially famous for its homemade dairy products, particularly the halloumi. Fresh, handmade, and served warm, it has a softer and more delicate character than many supermarket versions, with a texture that is firm outside but light inside.

The traditional bread is another highlight. Served warm and often wrapped to keep its heat, it works perfectly with tahini, olives, salad, and the early meze dishes. It is a small detail, but it sets the tone for the whole meal.

Other local specialities may include kolokasi, the Cypriot taro root dish, as well as goat, pork, lamb souvla, snails, koupepia, village potatoes from the red soil villages, and seasonal vegetable dishes.

Atmosphere and Service

The atmosphere at Mousikos is relaxed, warm, and very Cypriot. The courtyard setting makes summer evenings feel special, while the traditional architecture gives the restaurant a strong sense of place.

Service is often praised for being efficient and friendly, even when the restaurant is full. That matters, because Mousikos can get very busy, especially during summer and on popular evenings. The team keeps the meze moving without making the meal feel rushed, which is exactly what you want from a proper restaurant experience.

Opening Hours

Mousikos Restaurant usually operates from Monday to Saturday in the evening, from 18:30 to 22:30, and is closed on Sundays.

Opening hours can change, especially around holidays or quieter periods, so it is best to call ahead before visiting.

Location

Mousikos Restaurant is located at Kyriakou Matsi 6, Sotira, in the Famagusta district of Cyprus.

The village of Sotira is only a short drive from Ayia Napa and Protaras, making the restaurant a very good dinner option if you are staying in the nearby coastal resorts but want a more authentic village meal.

Reservations

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during the summer months. Mousikos is popular with locals as well as visitors, and tables can fill quickly even on weekdays.

If you want to sit in the courtyard, it is worth booking ahead and asking for outdoor seating when available.

Why Visit Mousikos Restaurant?

Mousikos is a must visit if you want traditional Cypriot meze served in one of the most charming restaurant settings in the area. It combines excellent food, homemade products, warm service, and a beautiful courtyard in a way that feels genuine rather than staged.

It is especially good for travellers who want to move beyond the beach resort restaurants and experience village dining. The short drive to Sotira is well worth it for the food alone, but the setting makes it even better.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Mousikos is in the evening, especially during spring, summer, and early autumn when the courtyard can be enjoyed at its best. Arriving earlier in the evening can make the experience feel calmer before the restaurant fills up.

If you are ordering meze, come hungry. This is not a quick snack stop. It is a full meal, a long table, and possibly the moment you realise you have eaten more halloumi than you planned. Worth it.

Out to Mousikos in Sotira, Famagusta, while on vacation at the east coast. Good location, great old restored traditional home turn into a restaurant. Busy place with both tourists and locals. Service was good and timely. Food was not as good as expected from such a tavern. Possibly because of being too busy but they can do better especially on the ocen baked goat, kleftiko, and lamb chops. Quantity of mezedes was not adequate for our group, and we ordered extra individual dishes. Snails was surprisingly good. Visited the place 3rd week of September and it was bysy on a weekday. October could be a better visit.

A must try when in Cyprus. The restaurant is an old house. The chef helped us to avoid over ordering. The mezze was amazing. The food was so good and good quantities. The service was not the best, maybe because they were full. Like they never refilled our glasses of wine. They even got fewer glasses. They didn't clean the table until we were standing and leaving. But still a must visit
