Vangelis Tavern

Vangelis Tavern is a traditional Cypriot restaurant in Protaras, known for generous portions, classic local dishes, warm hospitality, and a family history that goes back generations. Located along the main Protaras road, close to Bill’s Pub and the Vangelis Constantinos Hotel area, it is an easy place to reach for visitors staying nearby or travelling through the resort centre.

What makes it special

Enjoy authentic Cypriot dishes, including some with modern touches.

Large portions of classic plates such as lamb kleftiko, mixed grill, and seafood platter.

Friendly service in a cosy setting, sometimes with complimentary desserts at the end of your meal.

This is one of those taverns that feels properly rooted in the area. With family tradition dating back to the late 1800s and the tavern operating since 1948, Vangelis brings together old Cyprus charm, reliable food, and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that suits both locals and holidaymakers.

A Long Running Family Tavern

Vangelis Tavern is now run by the fifth generation of restaurateurs, which gives the place a real sense of history. It is not a new restaurant trying to imitate tradition. It comes from a long family background in Cypriot hospitality and cooking.

The restaurant is open all year round, which is always a good sign in a resort area like Protaras. During the summer it works as a convenient dinner stop for visitors, while in winter it becomes a cosy local option when many seasonal restaurants are closed.

The interior is welcoming and traditional, with a comfortable setting that works well for casual meals, family dinners, and evenings where you want proper Cypriot food without overcomplication.

The Food at Vangelis Tavern

The menu at Vangelis Tavern focuses on traditional Cypriot cuisine, with a mix of starters, salads, grilled dishes, seafood, meze, and classic local specialities. The food is generous, hearty, and clearly designed for people who arrive hungry.

You will find simple starters such as olives, yoghurt, dips, hot bread, halloumi, garlic butter, and traditional small plates. The hot bread served with garlic butter is one of those little touches that immediately makes the table feel welcoming.

The menu also includes village salad, halloumi with sesame seeds and carob syrup, fish soup, fried dishes, couscous, fried potatoes, local chips, grilled meats, seafood, and vegetarian options.

Traditional Cypriot Dishes

Vangelis Tavern is a good choice if you want to try familiar Cypriot dishes in a traditional setting. Moussaka, vegetarian moussaka, village style plates, sausage, sheftalia, kebabs, and other local favourites are all part of the menu.

The sheftalia is especially worth considering if you want something very Cypriot. These traditional sausage style parcels are full of flavour and work beautifully with local chips, salad, pitta, and dips.

For visitors who prefer comfort food, the grilled meats and traditional dishes are the safest bet. The portions are generous, so this is not the place for pretending you are only having a light bite. That plan will collapse fast.

Meze at Vangelis Tavern

Meze is one of the main reasons to visit Vangelis Tavern. The restaurant offers meat meze and fish meze, with small and large options available for a minimum of two people.

A Cypriot meze is a full dining experience, not just a starter selection. Dishes arrive gradually throughout the meal, allowing you to taste dips, salads, grilled items, meats, vegetables, seafood, and other local plates depending on the meze you choose.

If you want to experience the tavern properly, the meze is a great option. It gives you variety, a sense of occasion, and a proper taste of traditional Cypriot hospitality.

Grills, Mixed Grill, and Local Chips

The grill section is a strong part of the menu, with options such as pork souvlaki, chicken kebab, sheftalia, traditional Cypriot sausage, giant pork chop, and mixed grill.

The mixed grill is a popular choice for anyone who wants a little bit of everything. Expect a generous plate with grilled meats, pitta, local chips, salad, and traditional accompaniments. The local chips are a highlight, especially because they feel homemade rather than frozen.

For a simple but satisfying meal, the mixed grill or sheftalia with chips is exactly the kind of order that makes sense at Vangelis.

Seafood and Fish Options

Vangelis Tavern also offers seafood dishes, including options such as mussels and grilled octopus. The fish meze is available for guests who prefer a seafood focused Cypriot meal.

This gives the restaurant enough variety for mixed groups, especially when some guests want grilled meat while others prefer fish or seafood. As always with seafood, it is worth asking what is freshest on the day.

Complimentary Sweets and Traditional Touches

One of the lovely traditional touches at Vangelis Tavern is the possibility of complimentary loukoumades after the meal. These small round doughnuts, usually covered with local honey, are a classic Cypriot sweet and a very nice way to finish dinner.

It is exactly the sort of detail that makes a meal feel more local and generous. After a big mixed grill or meze, eating dessert may sound ambitious, but somehow loukoumades always find a way. Dangerous little things.

Location and Getting There

Vangelis Tavern is located in Protaras, along the main road near Bill’s Pub and close to the Vangelis Constantinos Hotel area. It is easy to spot when walking through central Protaras.

There is a large car park nearby behind Bill’s Pub, which is useful if you are driving. The main bus routes also pass through this part of Protaras, connecting the area with Ayia Napa, Paralimni, Pernera, and other nearby resorts.

Why Visit Vangelis Tavern?

Vangelis Tavern is a strong choice if you want traditional Cypriot food in Protaras with generous portions and a proper family tavern feel. It is especially good for meze, mixed grill, sheftalia, moussaka, seafood dishes, and relaxed evening meals.

The fact that it is open all year gives it extra appeal, especially for visitors travelling outside the peak summer season. It feels dependable, local, and welcoming, with the kind of menu that suits families, couples, and groups.

Best Time to Visit

Vangelis Tavern is a good choice for dinner, especially if you want a filling meal after a day at the beach or a walk around Protaras. In summer, evenings are usually livelier, while winter visits feel quieter and more local.

If you plan to order meze, arrive hungry and give yourself enough time. Meze is best enjoyed slowly, not rushed between plans.

We had a very nice meal at Vangelis. We were very hungry and ordered two meals mix grill and sea food plater.First was brought home made bread with salty butter. Perfect to start your stomach working and after those delicious sets came. All was fresh, tasty and tender. We were fully satisfied. The only point I would say to me the sea food set could be a bit more salty but it’s a matter is taste. Will come again to try something else. The personnel were friendly and polite 🙏👍

The host was very friendly. Gave us a suggestion to have the seafood basket instead of the mezze and that was the perfect size for us. The food was super fresh n tasty. Not just fried seafood. Everything had flavour!!!! All the staff were staff and helpful. Reasonably priced.

What an incredible experience! We came here as a family and had the most wonderful dinner. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was outstanding from start to finish. We ordered a variety of fresh fish dishes, and every single one was absolutely delicious — perfectly cooked, flavorful, and beautifully presented. You can really taste the quality and care in the food. It was a perfect night out for the whole family. Highly recommend this tavern to anyone looking for authentic, amazing food and a great dining experience!

Returned again for the fantastic food! Still one of our family’s favourite places to eat on the strip. Food was as good as previous years. Service was good even though the restaurant was very busy tonight. Waiters interacted with my now teenagers and even remembered them as smaller children. Nice family friendly place to eat.
