Nestled in the heart of Ayia Napa, the Thalassa Museum stands as a testament to Cyprus’s rich seafaring history and its deep connection with the Mediterranean Sea. This unique museum offers a comprehensive exploration of the island’s maritime legacy, from the paleontological and prehistoric periods to contemporary times.

As you step into the Thalassa Museum, you’re immediately transported back in time. The centerpiece is a stunning, life-size replica of the ancient Kyrenia ship from the Classical period (400 BC), showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Cypriot shipbuilding. This vessel is not just a model; it represents a crucial part of Cyprus’s naval history.

Another highlight is the replica of a Mesolithic (9200 BC) papyrus vessel, offering insights into the island’s early maritime adventures. Alongside these ancient marvels, you’ll find a 19th-century traditional Cypriot boat known as “Passara,” highlighting the evolution of local shipbuilding techniques.

The museum also delves into Cyprus’s natural history, featuring bones and skulls of endemic pygmy hippopotamus and elephants that once roamed the island around 8000 years ago. These rare exhibits connect visitors to the island’s unique prehistoric ecosystem.

For marine biology enthusiasts, Thalassa is a treasure trove. The collection includes an array of stuffed fishes, mammals, sea turtles, and a variety of marine organisms. From shells to starfish, crabs to corals, the museum showcases the rich biodiversity found in Cyprus’s waters.
