Nestled in the heart of Ayia Napa, the Thalassa Museum stands as a testament to Cyprus’s rich seafaring history and its deep connection with the Mediterranean Sea. This unique museum offers a comprehensive exploration of the island’s maritime legacy, from the paleontological and prehistoric periods to contemporary times.

What makes it special

See a detailed reconstruction of the Kyrenia ship displayed in the museum.

View ancient marine fossils and exhibits related to local animal history.

Enjoy a relaxing visit with affordable entry and fewer crowds.

As you step into the Thalassa Museum, you’re immediately transported back in time. The centerpiece is a stunning, life-size replica of the ancient Kyrenia ship from the Classical period (400 BC), showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Cypriot shipbuilding. This vessel is not just a model; it represents a crucial part of Cyprus’s naval history.

Another highlight is the replica of a Mesolithic (9200 BC) papyrus vessel, offering insights into the island’s early maritime adventures. Alongside these ancient marvels, you’ll find a 19th-century traditional Cypriot boat known as “Passara,” highlighting the evolution of local shipbuilding techniques.

The museum also delves into Cyprus’s natural history, featuring bones and skulls of endemic pygmy hippopotamus and elephants that once roamed the island around 8000 years ago. These rare exhibits connect visitors to the island’s unique prehistoric ecosystem.

For marine biology enthusiasts, Thalassa is a treasure trove. The collection includes an array of stuffed fishes, mammals, sea turtles, and a variety of marine organisms. From shells to starfish, crabs to corals, the museum showcases the rich biodiversity found in Cyprus’s waters.

It is good for the city when you don't know how to spend your time. You may find some historical remarks, marin section, and temporary galleries. Overall I liked it, it has some atmosphere.

Cool museum, went there with family on a Tuesday in June and it was pretty calm with not many other visitors. Lots of interesting things to see, me and my brother liked the exhibits of endemic fish like the Mako shark. I also liked the geology of Cyprus area. Tickets were cheap and would recommend as a must see if you want to experience something more cultural in Ayia Napa.

on a rainy day it is worth making a visit. it's not that big and the kids would love it. there are some boats inside and although the architecture looks poorly maintained on the outside, the inside looks nice and modern.

So pleased we decided to take an hour out of our holiday to visit this very diverse museum. Well worth a visit, which provides a detailed history of the island of Cyprus and its culture. An added feature is that it is all access friendly, which allowed my disabled wife to enjoy the tour as well. Perfect!

One of the best museums of the island. The reconstruction oh Kyrenia ship inside the building is worth while. Since we are not able to exhibit the remains of the original ship wreck due to the occupation of Kyrenia since 1974. Fossils, sea shells, fish and mammals. Archaeological exhibits, and an art exhibition of the greatest Cypriot artists' works of art recovered from the occupied Famagusta Municipal Gallery.

Small but interesting. Lots of painting on the upper floor. Very big boat replica as center piece in the building. Lots of marine life in the basement and various items in the mid area of the museum.
