Situated atop Paphos Harbour, Saranta Kolones, also known as the Forty Columns Fortress, is the remnants of a splendid fortress dating back to the 7th century. While the name implies the presence of 40 columns, the actual number is not as significant. These granite pillars are commonly believed to have belonged to a medieval marketplace.

Originally, the fortified structure, with its sturdy walls, towers, and moat, served as a defense against raids on the harbor. However, an earthquake in the 12th century reduced most of the fortress to rubble. Visitors are welcome to explore the expansive grounds free of charge, but caution is advised due to the scattered remains and ruins.
