If you’ve recently come across the term Protaras Riviera, you’re not alone in wondering what it means. Is it a luxury resort? A new neighbourhood? A marketing slogan? The answer is bigger than all of those — and it could change the way travellers experience one of the Mediterranean’s most sun-drenched coastlines.

What Is Protaras Riviera?

Protaras Riviera is the bold new destination brand officially launched by the Municipality of Paralimni–Deryneia on the eastern coast of Cyprus. It is not a single hotel, a beach club, or a private development. It is a unified identity for an entire region — a strategic reimagining of what this part of Cyprus is, what it offers, and how it should be known to the world.

The initiative brings together the coastal resorts of Protaras, Pernera and Kapparis with the inland communities of Paralimni, Deryneia, Frenaros and Acheritou under one coherent, contemporary destination concept. The idea is simple but powerful: rather than marketing each village or beach in isolation, the region presents itself as a single, diversified and year-round destination — the Protaras Riviera.

At its heart, the brand is built around one extraordinary geographic fact: this is where the sun first rises on Europe every day. That single image — of dawn breaking first here, on this eastern tip of Cyprus, before anywhere else on the continent — gives the Protaras Riviera its central message: renewal, light, and the beginning of something new.

The Story Behind the Rebrand

The Protaras Riviera campaign has been years in the making. It was developed under the guidance of Peter Economides, an internationally recognised brand strategist, and brought to life through a cinematic promotional video directed by Nicholas Petrou, a videographer who was born and raised in the area — lending an authentic, insider voice to the visual storytelling.

The strategy reflects a shift in thinking about what tourism in eastern Cyprus can and should be. For decades, Protaras was known primarily as a summer beach destination — sun, sea, sand, and not much more. The Protaras Riviera rebrand challenges that perception directly. It positions the wider area as a modern Mediterranean destination with depth: one rooted in cultural heritage, agricultural identity, and genuine Cypriot character, yet designed for the future and committed to sustainable, year-round growth.

Local authorities have been clear about the ambitions behind the initiative. Paralimni–Deryneia Mayor Giorgos Nikolettos has described Protaras as “the flagship of our economy” and a “valuable asset for the entire municipality,” while emphasising that the goal is to extend the visitor experience beyond the seafront so that tourism benefits inland communities as well.

What Does the Protaras Riviera Include?

The Protaras Riviera is not just a coastline. It is an experience built across five pillars:

See

The visual drama of the eastern Mediterranean is the region’s most immediate gift. Crystal-clear turquoise waters, award-winning Blue Flag beaches, golden coves, sunrise viewpoints, and the open horizon of the sea at first light — this is a landscape designed to be looked at, remembered, and photographed. The beaches of Protaras, Pernera and Kapparis are among the cleanest and most celebrated in all of Europe.

Taste

The red earth of the Kokkinochoria — the “Red Villages” of which Paralimni, Deryneia, Frenaros and Acheritou are a part — is some of the most fertile in Cyprus. It produces distinctive local potatoes, strawberries, vegetables, and herbs that find their way onto the tables of seaside tavernas and village kitchens alike. Gastronomy here is not imported: it is rooted in the land, shaped by tradition, and elevated by the warmth of Cypriot hospitality.

Feel

From open-water swimming and water sports to diving, snorkelling, cycling routes, wellness retreats and yoga, the Protaras Riviera is a destination built for the active body and the resting mind in equal measure. Its crystal-clear waters make it particularly prized among divers, with infrastructure upgrades underway to strengthen the region’s profile as a leading diving destination in the Eastern Mediterranean. Year-round sporting events further cement the area’s appeal beyond the traditional summer season.

Hear

History is not silent here. The region is home to the Neolithic settlement of Nissia in Protaras, one of the most significant prehistoric sites in the Famagusta region. Ancient coastal ruins, Byzantine churches, traditional architecture, cultural festivals, music and dance all speak to thousands of years of continuous human presence. The communities of Paralimni, Deryneia, Frenaros and Acheritou each carry their own heritage — stories of the land, of conflict, of faith, and of survival.

Breathe

Beyond the coastline, the Protaras Riviera opens into fields, walking trails and countryside landscapes shaped by agriculture and the rhythm of the seasons. This is a place where the fertility of the land is part of the destination’s identity — where you can slow down, breathe deeply, and feel genuinely connected to the Mediterranean as it was before mass tourism arrived.

A Destination for Every Season

One of the central ambitions of the Protaras Riviera brand is to promote the region as a year-round destination, not just a summer escape. This is both a strategic and a practical goal. Eastern Cyprus enjoys one of the warmest and most stable climates in Europe, with long, mild winters and spring and autumn seasons that are ideal for outdoor activities, cultural exploration, and slower-paced travel.

By widening the narrative beyond beaches and pools, the Protaras Riviera creates compelling reasons to visit in October, February, or April — not just July and August.

Why It Matters

The Protaras Riviera is more than a new logo or a catchy tagline. It represents a conscious decision by a community to take control of how it is seen, understood and valued by the wider world. In an increasingly competitive global tourism landscape, destination branding matters — and the eastern coast of Cyprus has long punched below its weight in terms of international recognition relative to the quality of its offer.

By presenting the region as a unified, coherent destination with a strong identity, a distinctive story, and a compelling range of experiences, the Protaras Riviera positions eastern Cyprus as a serious contender on the Mediterranean tourism map — not just for sun-seekers, but for discerning travellers looking for authenticity, beauty, culture, and the simple, irreplaceable pleasure of watching the first light of a new day rise over the sea.
