Potamia Beach (Dog Friendly Beach)

4.6164 Reviews#20 in Beaches

Potamia Beach in Cyprus is a true hidden gem for those who seek tranquility away from the bustling tourist spots. As a British expat living in Cyprus, I’ve found this beach to be a delightful retreat, offering a unique combination of serenity and natural beauty. The beach’s isolation means that you’re often one of the few people there, making it feel like your own private paradise.

What makes it special

Enjoy a dog-friendly environment where your furry friends can play and swim freely

Free sunbeds and umbrellas provided for relaxation by the shore

Opportunity to socialize with other dog owners in a friendly community atmosphere

What makes Potamia Beach stand out is its dog-friendly nature. It’s a place where your furry friend can run freely, enjoying the sand and sea as much as you do. The views here are nothing short of breathtaking, with the cliffs providing a dramatic backdrop to the azure ocean. It’s the perfect place to sit back, relax, and watch the waves roll in, all while your dog explores to their heart’s content.

Remember to bring all the essentials for a day at an isolated beach – water, snacks, and sun protection are a must. There are no facilities here, so you’ll need to be self-sufficient. Also, always ensure you leave the beach as pristine as you found it, to preserve its natural beauty for others to enjoy.

  • Isolated and serene: Ideal for those looking to escape the crowds.
  • Dog-friendly: Your furry friends are welcome to enjoy the beach with you.
  • Stunning views: Dramatic cliffs and ocean vistas.
  • No facilities: Bring your own supplies for a comfortable day.

Directions to Potamia Beach (Dog Beach) in Kapparis, Cyprus

Reaching Potamia Beach, popularly known as Dog Beach, near Kapparis is straightforward if you follow these directions:

  1. Starting Point: If you’re heading to Protaras via the highway (not the Ayia Napa – Protaras seaside road), keep an eye out for the vibrant signs indicating the way to Dog Beach. These signs start appearing from the traffic lights towards Protaras.
  2. Missed the Sign? No worries! Continue on the road from Protaras towards Kapparis. You’ll pass Zorbas bakery on your right and Amore Hotel on your left. Keep going straight until you reach the next major crossroad.
  3. Turn Towards the Sea: At this crossroad, you’ll see a sign on a street light on your right, directing you to turn towards the sea. This turn is located between a residential house and a yellow apartment building.
  4. Follow the Road: Once you’ve turned, follow this road as it leads you towards the sea. The road eventually becomes an off-road path, but it’s still navigable.
  5. New Dirt Road Connection (Since 2018): With the new dirt road that connects all the beaches, constructed in 2018, you have an alternative route. If you’re at MADD beach or Scouts beach, simply continue straight to the left and follow the dirt road until you reach Dog Beach.

Our only place where we can fully enjoy the outside time with our dogs while they can play and swim. I absolutely love that place. Perfect in the winter months, getting crowded in summer. Free sunbeds and umbrellas which are unfortunately sometimes blocked by people without dogs just to save a few bucks - but as long as they are fine with our dogs being there, I'm fine with it, too.

As a passionate dog lover, I was excited to visit this dog-friendly beach, but my experience fell short of expectations.### Cleanliness ConcernsUnfortunately, the beach was not well-maintained. I encountered numerous areas with dog waste that had not been picked up, which detracted from the overall enjoyment of the space. It’s disheartening to see fellow dog owners not taking responsibility for their pets, as this can create an unpleasant environment for everyone.### Water QualityThe beach waters were murky and foamy, which raised concerns about cleanliness and safety for both dogs and their owners. A clear and inviting shoreline is essential for a pleasant beach day, and this aspect was lacking.### AmenitiesOn a positive note, the beach did offer comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas, which provided a nice touch for relaxation. However, the persistent odor of dog urine lingered in the air, making it difficult to fully enjoy these amenities.### ConclusionIn summary, while the concept of a dog-friendly beach is wonderful, there is room for improvement in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. I hope that with some changes, this beach can become a more enjoyable destination for both dogs and their owners.

Pretty beach and dog friendly as the name suggest and with a sign to prove it. Eventhough, the umbrellas once made are still standing they are in desperate need of repair.A small fence around the beach would be beneficial to the peace of mind of the people in and out of the beach.

Very inaccessible to people with disabled issues. Our car got stuck and we needed a tower to pull us out as the stones and soft sand made life difficult to get up the hill. They should fill the stones and gap or fix it so its easier accessible to people with leg issues. The water was nice, but no cateen nearby.

Great beach for dogs and anyone really in the area. The beach is not so crowded, there are free beds and umbrellas and the water is clean and calm. This beach is much better than the dog beach of larnaca and in my opinion is worth the longer trip from Nicosia.
