The enchanting Medieval Monastery of Agia Napa, located in the heart of the village, is a true gem that takes visitors on a journey back in time. Constructed around 1500 AD, this remarkable structure resembles a Medieval Castle, captivating all who lay their eyes upon it. Partially nestled underground and skillfully carved into the rock, the monastery is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of its builders. Enclosed by an imposing towering wall, it exudes an aura of grandeur and spirituality.

Dedicated to ‘Our Lady of the Forests’, the monastery gets its name from the Ancient Greek term ‘Napa’, which means a wooded valley. This name perfectly captures the historical topography of the area, evoking images of lush greenery and serene natural surroundings. The monastery’s devotion to nature is further emphasized by the presence of an ancient sycamore tree, standing proudly before the southern gate. Believed to be over 600 years old, this majestic tree stands as a living witness to centuries of history and spirituality.

Throughout its rich history, the monastery has undergone various transformations. In 1950, it underwent a meticulous restoration, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Later, in 1978, it was transformed into an Ecumenical Conference Centre, playing a vital role in fostering dialogue and cooperation among churches in Cyprus and the Middle East. This significant shift allowed the monastery to become a beacon of unity and understanding in a region often plagued by division.

In 2007, with the re-establishment of the Holy Metropolis Constantia Ammochostos (Famagusta), the monastery fell under its administration. This brought a new chapter in its long and storied existence, as it became intricately linked to the spiritual journey of the faithful. To further accommodate the growing number of worshippers, a new church dedicated to the Virgin Mary was erected southwest of the monastery in 1994. This addition not only served as a place of worship but also as a symbol of hope and faith for the community.

The Medieval Monastery of Agia Napa stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the resilience of human spirit. Its rich history, architectural beauty, and spiritual significance make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the captivating heritage of this ancient land. As visitors wander through its hallowed halls, they are transported to a different era, where time seems to stand still, and a sense of awe and reverence fills the air.
