Nestled in the heart of Paralimni, “To Souvlaki Tou Soukri” offers a dining experience that is as delightful as it is unique. On a seemingly ordinary Saturday, my visit to this local gem revealed the magic of dining directly off the table – a tradition wrapped in the simplicity and charm of Cypriot hospitality.

The moment you settle into your seat, the vibrant and inviting atmosphere welcomes you to dive into a menu that promises an easy and fulfilling choice. The standout feature, “pieces on greaseproof paper,” simplifies the often daunting task of choosing what to eat. Forget the indecision and the wish to try everything on the menu; here, you can have it all, exactly how and as much as you desire.

As our hungry and eager group decided on our mezze, we were pleasantly surprised by the option to order appetizers by the piece, allowing us to sample a variety without committing to a full portion. With our selections made, including salads and potatoes, we were all set for the experience to unfold.

The magic began with the arrival of warm, freshly cut Greek pita bread, not on plates, but directly on the table, challenging our conventional dining norms and stirring a curious excitement among us. This was soon followed by a parade of mouthwatering appetizers and perfectly grilled meats, creating a delightful mound on our table, nestled atop the bed of pita bread.

Just when we thought our table couldn’t hold more, a “rain of potatoes” descended, adding the final touch to our already abundant feast. Initially, the absence of plates may seem odd, but as the meal progresses, the unconventional method becomes not only enjoyable but also liberating, breaking free from the usual dining constraints and inviting a sense of freedom and nonconformity.

The true essence of “To Souvlaki Tou Soukri,” however, lies in the taste and quality of the food. Words barely do justice to the tenderness and juiciness of the souvlaki, which stands out as a culinary highlight in Cyprus.

Located at 46 Protaras Avenue, Paralimni, this place is a must-visit for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the local dining culture, savor exceptional grilled delights, and perhaps, rethink the necessity of plates in the process.
